Why You Should Throw Out Your Synthetic Leggings — And What To Wear Instead

I've been a dermatologist for 8 years. And like most of my patients, I work out — Pilates three times a week, sometimes yoga.

Like most of my patients, I spent years wearing what everyone considers the standard — Lululemon, Alo, anything that looks good and holds its shape.

I never asked questions. Until one day I looked at the label.

87% nylon. 13% elastane.

I'm a dermatologist — and I had been wearing plastic against my skin for two hours every single day.

You watch what you eat. But what about what touches your skin every day?

Synthetic fabrics — nylon, polyester, elastane — are petroleum derivatives. Plastic, in the literal sense.

Here's what that means for your skin and body:

Your skin can't breathe

Synthetic fabric creates a warm, moist, closed environment — exactly where irritation, itching, and breakouts thrive

Chemical dyes with no certification

Most synthetic fabrics are dyed with compounds that have never been independently tested — and they're sitting against your skin for hours

Microplastics

Every time you wash synthetic leggings, thousands of plastic microparticles are released — into the water, into the air, back onto your skin

The smell that never leaves

Bacteria embed in synthetic fibers — that's why the odor stays even after washing

So what's the solution? I started looking for an alternative

My criteria were simple — organic cotton with real certification, not just an "eco" label, and fabric that actually stretches and holds up during a workout.

It was harder to find than I expected. Most "natural" brands are bamboo (viscose — toxic processing) or blends with a high percentage of synthetics.

After weeks of searching, I came across Levani

I was skeptical about cotton in activewear at first. Doesn't cotton get heavy? Lose its shape?

It doesn't. And three months later, I haven't gone back.

Here's why:

92% organic cotton — GOTS certified

That's not marketing, that's independent verification from the field to the finished garment

8% spandex — but non-toxic

That's what gives the stretch — the leggings move with you, fit your body, don't slide down during a plank

The fabric feels like a second skin

The first thing you notice when you put them on isn't compression or that synthetic chill — it's just soft, natural fabric that feels like it belongs on your skin

OEKO-TEX certified on the finished garment

Every dye, every seam tested for skin safety

Your skin after a workout feels different

No irritation, no feeling like you were wrapped in plastic for two hours

You wear them all day

From the mat to the street, to lunch, back home. You won't want to take them off

I'm not here to call out any brand.

But I am asking: if you're careful about what you eat, if you choose organic food — why doesn't the fabric touching your skin for 2-3 hours every day deserve the same attention?

Most people assume cotton can't perform. I thought the same — until I tried Levani.

Three months later, it's the only thing I wear — to the studio, for coffee, on walks. Here's why:
